The mission of Timeless: Ancient Psalms for the Church Today is to encourage the practice of reading, studying, and singing the Psalms through fresh musical compositions, new translations and commentaries, seminars, and multi-media resources.
This mission grew out of the recognition that reading, studying, and singing psalms, which once was common practice for Christians, has decreased over the last century. Because the Psalter instructs Christians in the words and movement of worship, Mark Shipp initiated a project to set the psalms to music over a decade ago. The result is a multi-volume psalter, centered on new songs that are not only beautiful but also faithful to the message and theology of the psalm. The inclusion of new translations, commentary, and reflection by Old Testament scholars make these volumes unique and particularly suited for personal worship and devotions, as well as corporate worship.
The project drew its name from the timeless value of the psalms for worship in the ancient Jewish temple and in the church. Well over one hundred scholars, lyricists, composers, singers, and editors have contributed to this ecumenical project and the publication of the first two psalter commentaries. A third volume is currently underway. In addition, Timeless is developing a separate hymnal.
After the publication of the first volume an interest in recording the songs developed and the Timeless Audio Project began. The first CD, “Be Still and Know: Timeless Psalms of Comfort, Trust and Hope” was produced in 2014. It was followed by “Where Are You Lord? From Lament to Praise in the Psalms” in 2015, and “Come and Listen, Taste and See: Timeless Psalms of Wisdom, Torah and Creation” in 2017. The fourth CD “The Lord Reigns: Timeless Psalms of David’s and God’s Kingship” was released in 2018. In addition, individual songs are available for download on this website.
