About the Work
This narrative recounts the journey of a young woman named Much Afraid, who yearns to leave her family, the Fearings, and embark on a quest to the mountains where the Shepherd resides in the Kingdom of Love. This allegory chronicles her growth and confrontations with her fears at every juncture. However, it transcends that narrative, encompassing the experiences of you and me as we are transformed by the Shepherd’s guidance. We also long to courageously ascend to the mountaintops, fulfilling the divine plan for our lives.
The book and musical draw inspiration from the Old Testament scriptures in Psalm 18:33 and Habakkuk 3:19, which proclaim, “He makes my feet like hinds’ feet, and He makes me walk upon my high places.”
Introduction to Hinds’ Feet on High Places
Three thousand years have passed since the time of David, and everything about his world seems strange and remote to us now. But, the joys and pains of his faith are as vivid to us today as they were to those who heard the psalms for the very first time. We have all known the despair that led him to cry “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me!” And we can all understand the psalmist’s joy at feeling the presence of God when he writes, “He makes my feet like hinds’ feet and sets me upon my high places.”
We strive endlessly to know that presence, and we suffer every time it eludes us, wishing that life could be only the peaks, the moments of union with God, and that the valleys could be left behind forever. We wish we could be like the hind, leaping effortlessly from summit to summit, and not poor human plodders, losing our way at every turning.
What we forget is that that at the high places is always in front of us, even in the midst of greatest suffering, and that all we need to do is keep the eyes of the spirit open to see it.
Hinds’ Feet on High Places is about the journey of Miss Much-Afraid, a heroine we should all recognize easily, as she struggles to follow the Shepherd to those High Places.
